Suffice it to say that with today’s busy lifestyles, it is often difficult to imagine one obtaining their college degree, particularly for those who have children. Disabled students can also find it difficult, depending on the degree of their disability.

In a study done by the National Center for Education Statistics back in 2001, thirty-six percent of higher education institutions reported that their main goal of offering distance education or online degree programs was to ensure that students have complete access to obtain their degrees on a variety of levels. Sixty-seven percent of those colleges and universities studied also reported that offering students reduced time constraints for taking courses in order to increase student enrollment was the most important goal of their online course degree programs.

It was also shown that public two-year colleges and universities, such as community colleges, are more likely to offer these online course programs as opposed to private or public four-year institutions.

So, what do all these numbers mean? They simply mean that in 2001 when this study was compiled, colleges and universities around the nation understood the importance of offering the opportunity to gain a college degree that is convenient and less time consuming than attending a traditional school. Single mothers, parents with young children and those with debilitating disabilities are now able to obtain their college degree without ever leaving home.

In fact, in this same study it was shown that ninety-five percent of all institutions that offered courses through distance learning used websites in order to offer their courses. Of those, sixty-six percent reported that they followed all accessibility guidelines for students with disabilities to some extent. This can mean the difference between someone with a debilitating disability receiving his or her degree or forever wondering “what if”.

While students with disabilities seem to be those affected most by this breakthrough, mothers with children still at home, typically younger than five years old, find it helpful as well. With online education, mothers have the opportunity to attend their courses when they have time. Attending a traditional college would bear the burden of daycare costs to say the least. When studying for a degree through online college instruction, children can be at home with their mother. She can study at night while they are sleeping or any other time that she feels she can carry out the necessary requirements while remaining completely focused on her course materials. Those who work full-time jobs can also reap the benefits of online college course instruction by having the convenience of attending classes after work, while still being at home with family.

Of course, online college degrees do not come easy. One studying for an online degree will need to be self-disciplined and have the self-motivation needed to ensure that they continue with the course and complete all their assignments in a timely manner. While there are many benefits of having flexibility in class attendance, it is important to be able to maintain time management skills that will help to complete the course within the time that the student has allotted. As far as school time allotment, most online college degree programs allow students to study at their own pace, giving them as much time as they need to finish their courses and obtain their degrees.

Having the flexibility of obtaining an online college degree is why many people have grown fond of this breakthrough in higher education. Students with disabilities, mothers with young children or simply those who do not have the convenience of time for higher education can soon find themselves basking in new careers and a better style of living. A higher education is becoming increasingly more important as the years go by. Not having a college degree will soon negate any chance of employment in a suitable job position. Having the ability to learn new skills and get a college degree from an accredited online college or university is becoming one of the most favored aspects of higher learning.
