Biomedical Engineer

Biomedical engineers are responsible for creating procedures and equipment that help address health concerns. He or she will consult with other lab technicians, doctors, nurses, and additional staff to determine the need for specific tests, pieces of equipment, and medical supplies. Biomedical engineers have created prosthetic devices, artificial joints, and artificial organs. These engineers have also worked to develop important diagnostic equipment such as the MRI machine, drug delivery systems, and specialized surgical equipment. He or she works with medical research and development firms, develops solutions for obsolete procedures and equipment, and designs tests to further test product validity. Biomedical engineers may also be responsible for testing medical prototypes, field-testing, analysis, and data collection.

Most companies require biomedical engineers to have at least a four-year degree in biomedical engineering. Some companies may require individuals to hold a Master’s degree for higher ranking, or supervisory positions. Biomedical engineers should gain real work experience while working to complete his/her education. The ability to work with and consult with other engineers, a strong background in health care, bio-sciences, and basic engineering principles is also required. Other recommended skills include: communication skills, mechanical abilities, computer skills, medical equipment knowledge, software knowledge, and technical writing skills.

The typical average salary of an experienced biomedical engineer is about $48,500 per year. Starting salaries pay an average of about $30,500 per year.
