Electronics Service Technician
Electronics service technicians service and repair various types of electronic equipment for both home and commercial use. These technicians are highly skilled at addressing problems with audio and video equipment, television equipment, stereo components, security systems, computer systems, satellite systems, and other electronic based products. Service companies or retail outlets employ most electronics service technicians, however some technicians may operate their own repair shops. He or she uses a wide variety of specialized tools, repair equipment, and diagnostic tools to diagnose the problem and determine the best course of action. Other common duties of an electronics service technician include: diagramming, replacing and/or repairing internal components, deciphering electronic schematics, and conducting tests.
The requirements to become an electronics service technician vary depending on the type of industry and position level. A high school diploma is always required. Some employers require completion of an apprentice program, specialized electronics certifications, or completion of electronics technician education courses. Other basic required skills include: general electronics skills and experience, experience with electronics repair tools, problem solving skills, customer service skills, computer skills, and communication skills.
Electronics service technicians are generally paid by the hour. The typical hourly wage for a technician varies depending on experience but is usually between $11 and $22.
