Data Entry Clerk

Data entry clerks operate data entry devices, verify information, and prepare documents for printing. Clerks process customer information, account information, and various other forms of documents by reviewing data for errors, resolving inconsistencies by using standard data entry procedures, and requesting further information for documents that are deemed incomplete. He or she may have to verify data before entering into a file, correct the data, delete unnecessary data, or combine data from several sources.

Data entry clerks input information into specific forms or files from hand written pages, recorded material, or figures contained in numerous printed files. He or she may have to decipher sloppy handwriting, garbled recordings, or faded text. Data entry clerks must keep a record of their time spent completing tasks, and proofread all reports, files, and forms to check for errors or duplicate information prior to submitting the final product.

Other duties include: maintaining office machines, and stocking necessary media such as disks, recorders, paper, cards, tapes or braille materials.

While no formal education is needed to become a data entry clerk, three to six months of on the job training is required. Strong typing skills, basic data entry skills, analytical skills, and computer skills are also required. The ability to use personal judgement, multi-task, and utilize strong decision making skills is recommended.

The typical average salary of an experienced data entry clerk is about $24,700 per year. Starting salaries pay an average of about $19,000 per year.
