Game Engineer

Game engineers are software engineers that are responsible for the execution of video games. These engineers program the game’s components, troubleshoot any potential problems, update the game software when needed, and maintain the help files for the game. He or she is in charge of future releases and/or system upgrades. Game engineers work to enhance game framework, expand game libraries, improve game functionality, implement game logic, create new game concepts, and produce new computer and/or video game designs. He or she must stay up to date with current technology and industry trends.

A Bachelor’s degree in computer science or similar area is the minimum educational requirement for entry-level game engineers. Employers will consider engineers who currently hold a two-year degree in programming, design, or 3-D animation and have a fair amount of work experience. Other necessary skills include: basic programming skills, technology background, programming language skills (such as Java, and C++), communication skills, design skills, software experience, and video game experience.

The gaming sector is a rapidly expanding area that is projected to continue to grow faster than almost any other industry. Competition in this industry is intense. The typical average salary for a game engineer is about $94,000 per year.
