Radio Equipment Technician

A radio equipment technician is responsible for operating, setting up, and troubleshooting all communications and/or radio equipment. He or she must maintain all communications equipment, as well as install all new equipment. Radio equipment technicians must be skilled at reading electronic blueprints, systems drawings, and specialized diagrams. He or she should be able install specific communications software, create connections, and repair electronic equipment by soldering and other approved methods.

Audio equipment technicians are required to hold an Associate’s degree for entry-level positions, and a Bachelor’s degree for more advanced positions. Many employers request that technicians obtain formal technical education in their chosen field, and some may allow this to be completed while training on the job. Technical certification, and specialized equipment training is also needed. Other recommended skills include: computer skills, electrical skills, customer service skills, quality control skills, audio repair skills, fiber optic experience, SWR training, and general maintenance skills. This field is expanding with a current projected growth rate of between nine and seventeen percent.

The typical average salary of a radio equipment technician is about $28,000 per year. Individuals seeking careers in specialized communication fields such as working with microwave signals, and those working with the military have more room for advancement.
