Entry Level Jobs: Important Things to Look For
Entry level jobs are something everyone has to go through at least once in their lives, quite possibly more if you consider career changes. An entry level job is an essential part to starting a career, somewhere where you find your niche, learn and hone skills and get good basic job training that will stand you in good stead in your chosen career for years, if not decades, to come.
Everyone has to go through the pain of finding and working entry level jobs at some point. Almost all careers have you starting at the bottom and even when you have qualifications that might bump you up the career path such as degrees, MBA’s and the like you still have to find your feet and get a grounding in a job. As such there is no real way of avoiding an entry level job.
The problem with these job opportunities is that they are often low paid positions and come with long/anti-social hours. Because the person going for these job opportunities is rarely experienced or skilled in matters directly related to the job companies are not too bothered about pay, and neither should the candidate looking for an entry level job be.
It is important to remember that most people move on from entry level jobs very quickly and so starting salary is not very important. What you need to be looking for is more along the lines of job opportunities with great career development and job training.
When you are looking at these positions ask the company how long it tends to take an individual to move on, ask them what job training they provide and what career path is open to employees. For entry level jobs it is not the here and now that matters, but what the job can provide career-wise that is all important.
Should you get an interview for these jobs remember it is often as much a personality fit and assessment of potential as it is what you can currently provide to a company. As such you need to be able to show what you have done, but also energy, commitment and real drive in getting things done. Show them that you have potential to become an asset to the company and that you are worth investing companies money in giving you job training.
These jobs provide a great grounding and, despite pay and hours, are exciting times laden with opportunities. Make sure that you get the best entry level job based not on what is in front of you now, but what is in front of your career. Your future job opportunities and salaries depend on it.
