Dosimetrist

Dosimetrists work as members of radiation oncology teams and work to calculate and administer the proper dosages of radiation therapy. He or she designs treatment plans, and supervises other staff to ensure the treatments are being carried out as designed. Dosimetrists are also responsible for training radiation staff, teaching oncology students and residents, and conducting clinical research studies. Other common duties include: calibrating and maintaining radiological equipment, collaboration with other medical staff, scheduling patient radiation treatments, setting up radiation equipment, and keeping up to date medical records to monitor patient progress.

Dosimetrists must hold an Associate’s degree as well as a Bachelor’s degree, and have completed a medical training program in the field of radiology. There are extensive training programs that must be completed, and certification is also required. Other recommended skills include: computer skills, communication skills, reporting skills, medical knowledge, and a technical background. The field of dosimetrics is expanding with a strong growth forecast expected.

The typical average salary of a dosimetrist with about two years of experience is about $72,700 per year. Dosimetrists who have a great deal more experience in the radiology field, those who have completed specialized training programs, and those who work as consultants have much greater earnings potential.
