Geriatric Care Manager
Geriatric care managers are in charge of the day-to-day business operations that take place in a retirement home, geriatric care facility, or hospital. He or she hires personnel, and ensures health quality standards are at the highest possible level. Geriatric care managers must also oversee employees to ensure all procedures, paperwork, insurance filings, and case handling meets regulatory standards. These managers work with physicians, families, and care givers to coordinate services and treatment programs. He or she will also help set up home care for those patients who are being discharged. Other typical duties include: clerical tasks, data entry, customer service, and conflict resolution.
A geriatric care manager is required to hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in social work or gerontology. High-level positions require a Master’s degree. Registered nurses are adequately qualified to apply for geriatric care manager positions. Other required skills include: management skills, decision making skills, the ability to work as part of a team, computer skills, teaching skills, reporting skills, and customer service skills. Due to an aging population, this field is expanding much faster than the average professional growth rate. This field is expected to have a positive growth rate for the next five years. Individuals with Master’s degrees have the best employment opportunities.
