Medical Technologist

Medical technologists are responsible for gathering and testing various samples for medical reasons. He or she must prepare testing mediums, collect samples, and implement many different types of tests to determine certain types of diseases, cancers, and other medical conditions. Medical technologists then prepare findings, compile the data in reports, and forward the results in writing to doctors and other medical specialists. These technologists also provide information to insurance companies as proof of diagnosis. Other common duties include: keeping accurate records, creating technical manuals for procedures, teaching other technicians how to carry out tests, completing lab work, and storing medical samples.

In order to become a medical technologist a four-year Bachelor’s degree in science is required. Certification in a pathology or clinical laboratory sciences program is also necessary. Technologists should have specialized training in laboratory testing equipment, sample collection, and venipuncture. A license may also be needed. Other recommended skills include: computer skills, communication skills, reporting skills, basic mathematic skills, biology skills, knowledge of proper laboratory protocol, and leadership skills. The demand for medical technologists is rising and expected to increase by about 14% for the next five years.

The typical average salary of a medical technologist is about $50,000 per year. Individuals who specialize in a particular area, and those who work in private medical practices have the best chance for career advancement and higher earning potential.
