MRI Technologist
MRI technologists, also known as MRI technicians, use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines to capture precise images that assist physician in making accurate patient diagnoses. MRI technologists maintain, prepare, and operate all MRI equipment. He or she is responsible for interacting with patients and making the process as stress free as possible. MRI technologists take basic medical histories, may request sedation medication, and ensure all protocol is followed properly. He or she typically works in a hospital setting, but may be employed at a diagnostic imaging facility. MRI technologists undergo a moderate amount of on the job physical activity. He or she may have to maneuver machinery and/or patients.
Other responsibilities include: thoroughly reading and interpreting physician instructions, determining proper patient placement and angles, scheduling appointments, answering patient questions, and preparing reports.
A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate radiology field is required to become an MRI technologist. On the job training while undergoing education is recommended. MRI technologists often apprentice as radiology technicians. Some employers require certification and/or registration. Other recommended skills include: computer skills, reporting skills, scheduling skills, communication skills, and a good bedside manner.
Salary levels vary a great deal depending on the level of experience and education, certification, and location. The typical average salary range for an experienced MRI technician is between $50,000 and $55,000 per year.
