Family Therapist
Each family encounters different problems and situations. Because of this, family relationships may either become strained and tense or stronger than before. In cases when a family is undergoing a serious problem or situation which can no longer be peacefully discussed or is disrupting their family life, a family therapist is recommended to step in, facilitate the family’s discussions, and act as mediator to the different family members.
A family therapist works in conjunction with a marriage or couple therapist. Their difference is that a marriage or couple therapist deals with managing or handling a married couple’s relationship whereas a family therapist involves the whole family. It used to place importance only in the role parents have in dealing with the growth and development of their children. Nowadays, however, family therapy also emphasizes having a strong, working relationship amongst family members. Family members may be related or not related by blood. Family members are encouraged to interact with other family members so as to achieve a harmonious relationship.
A family therapist usually assembles and talks to family members all at the same time for a session. The gravity of the situation usually dictates how many sessions a family must undergo. A family usually has 5-20 sessions with their therapist in most cases. Problems and situations are often talked about in these sessions with each family member stating his or her opinion
Psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, and counselors who also have additional education and training in family therapy often act as family therapists. A person who wishes to become a family therapist can also become one by graduating with a specific degree in family therapy. The requirements differ from state to state. However, to be able to be a family therapist, one must be licensed to do so under the state in which he or she wishes to practice in. A family therapist is said to garner an average salary of $42,945 a year.
