Overview

Theology degrees are structured to allow a path to direct religious leadership or to a more general role in religious research. Secular career options are also available to theology majors, although most enter the religious field to begin their careers.

As religion plays an increasingly large role in the world, major organized religious constantly seek out well qualified teachers and leaders for their congregations; as a result, most Theology majors are able to work in religious leadership through schools, congregations or advocacy groups. Most religious organizations require further study through graduate school and mentoring programs as well. Often times, students will attend a seminar for years beyond their undergraduate degree before becoming a full time religious leader.

Salary Expectations

Starting salaries vary widely depending on the tradition of the faith, as well as the particular position. In general, salaries being around $25,000, and can increase as students obtain more leadership positions as well as earning supplemental income in counseling and tutoring.
