Going to college can be a scary proposition for many young students. Part of the problem is that their college preparation does not begin early enough and it leads to difficulties further down the road. If you decide that you are going to go to school your freshman year in high school, then that is when you should begin your college preparation. Literally, the moment you decide that you are going to take your education to the next level is the time that you should start getting ready for it.

More than likely, your parents starting the process of college preparation long before that university you are thinking about attending ever entered your mind. In today’s day and age, in order to be able to attend a school, parents start saving money for their child’s education the moment they are born. That doesn’t mean you don’t have to chip in too though. Every little bit helps so take a part time job if you can and add to the fund.

When doing your college preparation, you are also going to want to look into and study for college entrance exams. SAT’s can be a very scary proposition for a student. You may have dreams of going Ivy League, but if you don’t ace the test, you could be stuck going to a community college. Get the study materials and learn them inside and out. If you have problems studying, take a prep class as they are aimed directly at these tests and dramatically increase your chances of getting a high score.

One other thing that is highly recommended is that you do a campus visit to the schools that you plan on attending. You may have an idea of what a school is like and then the moment you get on campus, you find that you are completely disappointed. Better to find out now than to have pinned all your hopes at one university and then spend the next four years in disappointment.

While you are visiting the campus, you may want to sit in on a class to see what they are all about. This should be an automatic phase of college preparation as every student should have an idea of what classroom life is going to be like. College classes are much different than high school classes and you better be prepared for them from day one. In college, you just don’t have the luxury of falling behind.

As you can see, there is a lot more to college preparation than sending in an application and seeing if mom and dad have enough for the tuition bill. There is plenty of work to be done on your end and not a minute to waste. First make your decision if you are going to attend or not and then start the process of choosing your schools. You have a lot of work ahead of you so get to it!
