Students in increasing numbers are now taking into account the environment when choosing a prospective college. Subsequently colleges that have ‘gone green’ are attracting higher numbers of students. A recent study by the Princeton Review highlighted the increasing number of students that are paying attention to a college’s environmental record and policies to help them make a decision about which college to attend. The report shows that nearly 1 in 4 students or 1 in 5 parents are paying particular attention to college’s environmental policies and principals, on top of the availability of environmental sustainability courses to help determine which college would be best suited. The study found that issues of importance were of course financial aspects, but surprisingly, this was closely followed by the environment as a secondary major concern. Even in this poor economy, it seems students have somewhat of a different mentality than those from previous generations in wanting to facilitate ‘greener lives’. I would tend to agree. There is a far deeper environmental consciousness that exists today than what there was even a few years ago. As a society we are constantly being drilled into the importance of the environment; from renewable energy sources, to lower greenhouse gases and carbon emissions. It seems, to me, we are far better versed in the importance of looking after the planet and in all the different ways to do so. This is reflected in the students wish to opt for colleges that adhere to environmentally friendly principals and practices. And also the recognition that future generations and possible employment opportunities are going to look fondly on ‘green credentials’. I believe that the results, from the study, also point out the fact that this may be the first generation that sees dire consequences as a direct result of past actions in relation to the environment. This is, no doubt, also helping the push for a greener education as well as the promotion of various green practices and such. The study noted that there was a 30% increase in the number of colleges wishing to be rated in their environmental education, practices and polices. Students seem to be the driving force behind this movement, forcing universities to adopt these desired changes. The concern that most people have, let alone students, is that the push for better environmental education, policies and practices is "too little too late". I personally think we will know quite soon whether this holds true or not. You can read the article on Reuters.
