1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers a broad, in-depth program in geology which was originally instituted in 1861. The interdisciplinary program examines the fundamental principles of the various sciences to develop a comprehensive understanding of the earth and its complex systems. Areas of focus include the origin and evolutionary path of the solid earth and the current state of the earth as well as an examination of the earth’s core, oceans and land surfaces. The curriculum examines historical interactions of the systems in order to make accurate predictions of the outcomes of future events. The degree programs at MIT include both undergraduate and graduate options. The undergraduate program centers on developing a fundamental understanding of the core elements of geology. The University of California at Berkeley offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the field of geology. The undergraduate major in geology provides a broad understanding of the natural science based on a quantitative approach to the discipline. Geology majors at the University of Wisconsin can pursue both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The undergraduate curriculum combines coursework from various earth sciences. More than one hundred courses are offered. Students have the option of specializing in geophysics, but it is recommended only if they intend to pursue a graduate degree in the field. 4. University of Washington
The Department of Earth and Planetary sciences at Washington University embraces a unique approach to the discipline; examining the planetary elements of the earth in comparison to other planets in the solar system. 7. Pennsylvania State University
The Department of Geosciences in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Pennsylvania State University examines the wide range of subdisciplines studying the earth’s structure, from its earliest beginnings and throughout its evolution.
