Miles College
Miles College is a privately-run, predominately African-American Christian institution located in Fairfield, near Birmingham, Alabama. Founded in 1896 and chartered by the state of Alabama in 1905 as Miles Memorial College, the institution offers a number of undergraduate programs in the liberal arts. Its campus is 51 acres in size and its student body consists of some 1,800 people currently enrolled. The institution is religiously oriented and is affiliated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
Miles College offers twenty-five different bachelor’s degrees in six different divisions: business & accounting, communications, education, humanities, natural sciences & mathematics and the social & behavioral sciences. Majors within these divisions include computer science, criminal justice, political science and others. A special program for working adults in the area of management is available as well. Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs are available to students off-campus. While no graduate programs are offered at Miles College, an interdisciplinary honors curriculum is available to students who meet the necessary requirements.
Miles College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. SACS provides accreditation to institutions within an eleven-state area, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
