Southeastern Bible College

As the name suggests, Southeastern Bible College is a privately-owned, Christian-oriented school near Birmingham, Alabama. The institution has a fundamentalist leaning and serves members of various Christian denominations, such as Baptists and Presbyterians. It was created in 1935 under the name of the Birmingham School of the Bible, meant for the purpose of training religious workers specifically in the area of divinity. The name was changed to Southeastern Bible College in 1952. The campus was relocated to Mountain Brook in 1988, until finally moving to its current 22-acre location in North Shelby, outside Birmingham, just recently in 2004. Student enrollment remains low at around 200 in total, and the College currently employs just over two-dozen faculty members.

As a religious school, Southeastern Bible College offers a limited number of programs centered on religious studies and theology. A bachelor of arts degree in Bible and theology is offered by way of various subjects covered in the college’s three academic departments: biblical science, education, and the arts and sciences. In addition to the Bible and theology major, a major in elementary education is also an option for students. Several minors in subjects like biology, English and history are possible, and a single associate’s degree is offered in leadership ministries. Other awards provided by SEBC include the Association of Christian Schools International Bible specialist certification for teachers, plus a one-year diploma in Biblical studies and a degree completion program.

Southeastern Bible College is accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE). ABHE, formerly known as the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges, is a religiously oriented faith-based national accreditation agency that encompasses approximately 200 institutions across North America, at which over 35,000 students are enrolled. It is recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation as well as the United States Department of Education. (ABHE, 5575 S. Semoran Blvd., Suite 26, Orlando, FL 32822-1781, 407-207-0808.)
