Stillman College

Stillman College was founded in 1876 by members of the Presbyterian Church for the purpose of training African-American ministers. Over the years, it has widened its educational focus from pure ministerial training, and today it is a private liberal arts college that is located on a 105-acre campus in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where some 1,200 undergraduates and around seventy faculty work or study.

Academic programs at Stillman College are focused on three divisions of undergraduate work. The arts and sciences division allows students to major in areas like biology, the computer sciences, mathematics, fine arts, the social sciences and English. The business division provides bachelor’s degrees for those majoring in business administration, and the education division offers programs in a number of different education-related subjects, including physical education. No graduate programs are available at Stillman College, though an honors school, a teacher education program and night courses are provided. Stillman College maintains Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs.

Stillman College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. SACS provides accreditation to institutions within an eleven-state area, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
