Troy University

Troy University is part of a large network of over sixty public institutions of the same name, including three others in Alabama located in Dothan, Montgomery and Phoenix City, the latter being a branch of the main campus. The original institution, Troy State Normal School, was founded in 1887 in Troy, Alabama to train teachers. Several subsequent name changes and a broadening of the scope of academics at the University led it to where it is today, with some 20,000 students enrolled at the main campus.

Troy University offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduate degrees are provided by six different academic divisions offering a wide variety of courses. Students can major in areas like biology, the computer sciences, English, geography, journalism, the political sciences, philosophy and education. The Sorrell College of Business offers bachelor’s degrees in business administration and technology management as well as an associate’s degree of science. Master’s degrees can be obtained in the computer sciences, criminal justice, business, international relations, public administration, education, nursing and other related subjects. A single doctorate program is available in the area of nursing. Troy University has a strong relationship with the United States Armed Forces, and maintains Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs for the Army and Air Force.

All members of the Troy University network are accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. SACS provides accreditation to institutions within an eleven-state area, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
