Lyon College

Lyon College is an independent, coeducational liberal arts college located in Batesville, Arkansas. Founded in 1872 by the Presbyterians from Arkansas as Arkansas College, the school, which now holds the reputation of being the oldest independent college in Arkansas, opened its doors in 1872 and, for four decades, remained under the guidance of the Long family. Surviving two world wars, the college steadily grew and in the 1990s, under its president, John V. Griffith, the college became known as a national liberal arts institution. In 1994, the college changed its name to Lyon College in honor of the family that had served it with distinction for over a half century.

Lyon College offers its students over 30 majors and 20 minors in liberal arts and sciences with concentrations in communications and education as well as pre-professional courses in health-related fields, law, engineering and medicine.

Cost of attendance for academic year 2009-2010 for fulltime students is US$27,308 broken down into tuition of US$19,424, student activity fee of US$224, technology fee of US$320 and room and board at US$7,340. Part-time students pay a cost of US$750 per credit if they are enrolled in less than 12 credits, US$580 if enrolled in more than 17 credits and US$365 if enrolled in 5 credits or less. To help students in paying for their cost of tuition and fees, financial aid in the form of loans, grants and scholarships for qualified students is extended.

A residential college, on-campus housing is available at Lyon College and, in fact, is required of all single, fulltime students who are below 21 years old and who are not living with their parents.
