California Institute of Arts
California Institute of Arts or CalArts was established in 1961 by Walt and Roy Disney through the merger of the Los Angeles Conservatory of Musicand the Chouinard Art Institute. It is the first American educational institution to provide visual and performing arts degrees in the undergraduate and graduate level.
Located thirty miles north of downtown Los Angeles, CalArts occupies 60 acres on hills overlooking the Santa Clarita City. The center of campus life is a sprawling five-level, 500,000-square-foot building housing different artistic disciplines under one roof. The building houses classrooms and galleries; art, animation and dance studios; music rehearsal rooms; theaters for drama, dance and film; a music hall; costume, scenery and machine shops; photo, computer and media labs; editing suites for film and video; a digital recording studio; library and cafeteria.
Other buildings on the CalArts campus include the the Ahmanson apartment complex, Chouinard dormitory, the Eli and Edythe Broad graduate art studios, and several annexes filled with more classrooms, studios, and other facilities.
Tuition at CalArts for 2009–2010 is $34,830 for full-time enrollment. Tuition covers basic instruction and facilities.
In 2008, CalArts enrolled 1381. With a faculty of 330, the student/faculty ratio: 7:1 at an average class size of 12 students.
CalArts is recognized internationally as a leader in every one of its degree programs. The U.S. News & World Report recognized CalArts as within its Top-Ten Rankings for art, film, painting, photography, sculpture, and theater. It is nationally recognized for its Animation Programs developed by its School of Film/Video, School of Critical Studies, School of Music and The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance.
