California Maritime Academy

A member of the 23-campus California State University system, The California Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is the only degree-granting maritime academy in the western United States specializing in United States Coast Guard licensing and re-certification courses such as automatic radar plotting aids, basic safety training, operator of uninspected passenger vessels training, and maritime security.

Founded in 1929, it is located Vallejo, California at the juncture of San Pablo Bay and the Carquinez Straits 30 miles from San Francisco. It operates six major simulators on campus and the training ship Golden Bear.

It manages eight academic schools and departments including the ABS School of Maritime Policy and Management, Department of Engineering Technology, Department of Marine Transportation, Department of Maritime Operations, Department of Sciences and Mathematics, Department of, Mechanical Engineering, Department of Naval Science, and Extended Learning.

The ABS School of Maritime Policy and Management confers degrees in two majors: Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/International Business and Logistics; and three minors in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, and Law. The Department of Engineering Technology offers the two-degree program, Facilities Engineering Technology and Marine Engineering Technology. The Department of Sciences and Mathematics offers one degree in Marine Science. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has major degree programs in BS Mechanical Engineering-USCG Option, and BS Mechanical Engineering Option and a minor in Power Generation. The Department of Naval Science confers a degree in Naval Science as well as supervising the campus’ Merchant Marine Reserve unit.

The Department of Maritime Operations has one major degree in BS Marine Transportation with minor in Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED. This department supervises the Golden Bear, pier and boathouse.

With an enrollment of more than 800 students, it maintains an average class size of 21 students for a student to faculty ratio of 15:1.

Academic costs include tuition of $150 per unit; housing (double occupancy) – $2,100; 19-meal plan – $2,315; Health Service Fee – $347; parking permit (semester) – $54; and ID Card – $10.

Courses at Cal Maritime comply with the International Maritime Organization’s Standards for Training Certification and Watchstanding Code and with the Association for Facilities Engineering’s training and preparation required for a Third Mate’s or Third Assistant Engineer’s License or Certified Plant Engineer-In Training endorsement.

The California Maritime Academy is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It programs are also accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission (Marine Engineering Technology and Facilities Engineering Technology programs); by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (Mechanical Engineering program); and by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (Business Administration program).
