Graduate Theological Union

The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) located in Berkeley, California is a large theological consortium made up of nine independent Seminaries and Schools of Theology and eight program centers. Founded in 1962 by ecumenical pioneers, the union hopes to develop an interfaith approach to preparing students for a career in religious ministry through interreligious collaboration in teaching, research, ministry and service.

GTU offers Doctor in Philosophy and Doctor in Theology degrees as a way to prepare students for a career in teaching, writing and scholarship as well as to become worthy leaders in their religious organizations. The common Master of the Arts degree in various fields of study related to religion is offered in cooperation with the nine member schools. The aim of the common M.A. degree program is to equip students with basic religious understanding for further graduate studies. GTU, in cooperation with the other members, also offers special courses for students who may want to pursue certificate programs or language lessons.

Cost of tuition per year at the GTU is US$24,960 for Ph.D. and Th.D; US$7,150 per year for Ph.D. and Th.D. continuing relations; US$13,850 for GTU Common M.A.; and US$6,930 for M.A. continuing relations. The school also offers special certificate courses as well as language courses which are all charged on a per-course basis. These costs pertain only to tuition and do not include other required fees.

To provide assistance to students who may find the cost of tuition too expensive, GTU offers financial aid not just to its own students but to students of all the seminaries and graduate schools who are members of the GTU.
