Holy Names University

Holy Names University is a private, co-educational learning institution located in Oakland, California. Run by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, the school is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Originally established in 1868 as a convent school for girls providing training for future teachers, it was only in 1971 that the university became co-educational.

Today there are approximately 1,114 students enrolled at Holy Names University coming from 20 U.S. states and 21 other nations. The students are guided in their studies by 123 fulltime faculty members 78% of whom hold the highest degrees in their respective fields. With a student to faculty ratio of 11 to 1 and the average class size no larger than 12, students are given the focus they need to insure the high quality of education they seek in the university.

The university offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, Master of Music and Master of Science in Nursing degrees.

Cost of attendance at the university for academic year 2009-2010 is US$27,000 per year for fulltime undergraduate students and US$905 per unit for part-time undergraduate students as well as those who enroll in excess of the prescribed 18 units. Graduate students pay US$730 per unit. These rates are only for tuition. Additional fees for room and board are charged to students who want to avail of the various on-campus housing options available. To help defray costs of attendance, the university extends financial aid in the form of loans, grants and scholarships for qualified students.
