Mills College
Mills College is an independent liberal arts college for women while also offering graduate programs to both men and women. It was founded in 1852 in Benicia, California as the Young Ladies Seminary. It was the school of choice in the area for the education of miners’, merchants’ and farmers’ daughters especially since the likes of University of California and Stanford University had yet to exist. It was renamed Mills College in 1865 when Cyrus and Susan Mills bought the seminary.
The college occupied its present 135-acre campus in 1871. It is located in the Oakland Foothills, on the east shore of San Francisco Bay. Located immediately off Highway 580 at the junction of MacArthur Freeway and Warren Freeway, its official address is 5000 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland, California. Total number of students is 1,510 comprised of 926 undergraduate women and 584 graduate women and men. The faculty is made up of 93 full-time and 88 part-time members. The average class size is 16 while student/faculty ratio is 12:1.
Mills College offers more than 40 majors from American Studies to Women’s Studies. The top 5 undergraduate majors include English; Psychology; Political, Legal, and Economic Analysis (PLEA), Child Development and Biology. The top 3 graduate degree and certificate programs, on the other hand, include Education (MA), Management (MBA), and Creative Writing (MFA).

Campus tours are offered Mondays thru Fridays at 10 am and 2:30 pm while classes are in session. A daily tour is offered at 2:30 pm at other times of the year. The Mills College shuttle stops in Oakland or Berkeley to bring commuters to the campus.
