The University of California, Los Angeles, which is known as UCLA, is a public research university. The campus is located in Westwood, Los Angeles, California and takes up 419 acres. This a very popular school and it receives more applications than any other university in the United States.

There are over 26,000 undergraduate and 11,500 graduate students attending UCLA. The students are being taught by 4,000 faculty members. The student-to-teacher ratio at the school is 20 to 1.

UCLA is a top-ranked school. It placed 25th on the U.S. World and News Report’s list of the top schools in the country for 2009. The University’s faculty is well-respected as well; UCLA is among the top 10 schools for faculty awards.

UCLA has facilities for Arts and Architecture, Dentistry, Education and Information Studies, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Law, Management, Medicine, Nursing, Public Affairs, Public Health and Theatre, Film and Television.

Admission Requirements

There is no Early Decision option offered to students at UCLA. The University accepts applications for the fall semester from November 1-November 30 each year. Acceptance notifications are sent out by March 31.

The University considers a number of factors when evaluating applications. Your academic record in high school is one of them. Your SAT or ACT scores will be factored in, along with your personal qualities (maturity, leadership ability, concern for others and the community). If you have had to face challenges before being able to apply to UCLA, the school will want to know more about them too. All this information gives the Admissions staff a better understanding of who you are.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Going to UCLA is a bargain for students who are California residents; they pay $0 for tuition. Out-of-state residents will get dinged for $20,021 to pay for their education.

Sports at UCLA

The UCLA Bruins have put up a very impressive record of academic achievements. They participate in the NCAA Division 1-A and are part of the Pacific Ten Conference. Teams from UCLA have won 124 national championships. In May of 2008, the golf team won the University’s 103rd NCAA title.

Athletes from UCLA have performed well in Olympic competition as well. They have medalled in every Games that they have participated in. In 2004, the University sent 56 athletes to the Games and they won a very impressive 19 medals.

Online Programs

The UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television offers online course that are open to current students, non-students and professionals alike. Students can choose from screenwriting, cinematography, dramatic literature, theater and film history, and film and television producing. Graduate-level courses for a Master of Science in Engineering degree are also available online.
