American University

American University, located in the capital state of Washington D.C. is a private, coed, liberal arts and doctoral institution that is affiliated to the Methodist church. It is most famous for the political activism of its students and in fact has received reviews from the “Princeton Review” for this very reason.

AU is a large university with more than 6000 undergraduate students in 57 degree programs, 3,297 graduate students in 51 Master’s level and 9 Doctoral programs, 1,667 law students and another 1,199 students in other non-degree/certificate programs. Despite the high number of students the student to faculty ratio remains at a good 14 to 1. Classes have an average size of 22.5. The student body is also very varied with 144 countries and all 50 states represented.

AU has six major schools and colleges, with a very broad range of programs and majors to choose from. AU’s six schools are:

College of Arts and Sciences
• Kogod School of Business
• School of Communication
• School of International Service
• School of Public Affairs
• Washington College of Law

Aside from the six major schools, there’s the Washington Semester Program and the AU Abroad, which welcomes international students to take part in classes and internship programs and sends AU students to different parts of the world to for purposes such as internships and learning a foreign language.

Admissions in AU is highly selective with an acceptance rate of 52.9%. Aside from transcripts, SAT/ACT test scores, essays and letters of recommendation, admissions encourage letting them know more about academic interests and life outside of the classroom.

The average tuition and fees for 2009-2010 is $34,973. On-campus and meal plans are available and room and board costs depend on the housing program chosen by the student.
