George Washington University
Students are largely drawn to the George Washington University (GW) for its solid international and political programs. Even its location, a few blocks from the White House in Washington, DC, provides a strong political and government-oriented atmosphere.
GW was chartered in 1821, and has since been renowned for the following areas of study: Undergraduate International Affairs, International Business, Political Science, Political Communications Programs, as well as graduate and doctoral programs in Business, Engineering, Social Sciences, International Affairs, Medicine, Education, Public Health and Law. But apart from its strong political orientations, it had also acquired some prominence in the 1930’s as a center for Theoretical Physics.
GW’s main campus is situated on forty-three acres of land in Foggy Bottom, but it has other educational sites. These include the twenty-three acre George Washington University at Mount Vernon College (also in Washington, DC), the Ashburn campus (Ashburn, Virginia) that focuses mostly on offering postgraduate degrees to students, and several other satellite education centers. These include the Alexandria Graduate Education Center in Alexandria, the Graduate Education Center in Arlington, and the Hampton Roads Center in Newport News, all in the state of Virginia.
George Washington University consists of nine schools and colleges: College of Professional Studies, Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, Elliot School of International Affairs, Graduate School of Education and Human Development, GW Law School, School of Business, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the School of Public Health and Health Services.
One notable feature of the Academics Programs at GW is its Accelerated Programs, wherein students are given the opportunity to complete their undergraduate and master’s degrees in less time than usual. For example, the seven-year BA/MD Program allows students to take up a liberal arts undergraduate program for three years. Then on the fourth year, they can enroll in the George Washington University School of Medicine to begin formal medical training. Such accelerated programs greatly benefit students who are definite at the onset that they would want to pursue further studies on their chosen academic program.
Another notable feature is GW’s Study Abroad Program, which enables over 700 George Washington University students each year to study abroad in the nearly fifty countries affiliated with the GW program.
Tuition for full-time undergraduate students is at $41,610. A student is guaranteed to retain his freshman tuition rate for up to ten continuous, full-time semesters at George Washington University.
