Les Aspin Canter – Marquette University
A permanent Marquette University presence has been established in Washington, D.C. through the Les Aspin Center. From a single student internship program in 1984, it has become an educational program that is nationally recognized in the field of public service. More than 1,600 students have benefited from the center’s programs as well as internship opportunities with institutions like the Department of Defense, the US Secret Service and even the White House.
The Marquette University-The Les Aspin Canter was established in 1988 by Father Timothy J. O’Brien while he was coordinating internships in political campaigns and congressional offices. Summer programs consist of coursework and internship in Capitol Hill. A big change occurred in 1994 when Les Aspin, the former Secretary of Defense was hired. He fully developed the internship program while working as a Distinguished Professor of International Policy. His work was cut short by his sudden death but the Washington Program was renamed after him. The program constantly undergoes expansion to maintain relevance and currency of contents. It is interesting to note that a good number of program participants have been successfully elected to local and national offices.
Small class sizes and personalized instruction characterize the Les Aspin Center. Comfortable living arrangements are provided through apartment buildings located just one block away from the center. The Les Aspin Center is located at 502 East Capitol Street, NE Washington, D.C., although it also provides its programs in the Marquette University main campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Approximate cost of program is $ 15,000.00 per semester for 17 credit hours. Due to the center’s accessibility to Washington’s Metro System and its critical location, private vehicles are not allowed nor needed.
