Florida Atlantic University
Florida Atlantic University was founded in 1964 in Boca Raton, Florida, on the site of a World War II United States Army airbase. It was created by an initiative of the Florida State Legislature, which wanted to create a public school that would serve the needs of the rapidly growing population. The institution has grown tremendously since then, with 27,000 students currently enrolled at seven different campuses: the main, 850-acre campus in Boca Raton, as well as satellite campuses in Dania Beach, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Harbor Branch, Jupiter and Treasure Coast. The student to faculty ratio at FAU is a relatively low 18:1.
FAU offers over 140 different degrees, including bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates. Bachelor’s degrees are provided in majors like accounting, architecture, art, civil engineering, the computer sciences, economics, geography, history, music, nursing, the political sciences and many, many others. Undergraduate certifications are also available in many areas as well as combined degrees. Master’s degrees can be obtained in many of the same areas as undergraduate programs, although the Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) offers eleven different tracks. Nearly twenty doctoral programs are offered to students of various science and education-oriented subjects, among others. A US Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program is offered to students of FAU.
Florida Atlantic University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. SACS provides accreditation to institutions within an eleven-state area, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
