Florida International University

Florida International University is a public institution located in Miami, Florida. It was opened in 1972 with the largest opening enrollment of any institution, and today remains one of the largest colleges in America with more than 38,000 students and over 1,000 faculty members (26:1 ratio). It is located on a 573-acre campus, offering degrees at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.

FIU provides students with bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates, though it also offers specialist and pre-professional programs. In total, there are around 200 academic programs and 280 majors to choose from. There are many different colleges and schools within the University that offer degrees to students. They are centered in architecture and the arts, the arts & sciences, business administration, continuing and professional studies, education, engineering & computing, nursing & health sciences, public health & social work, the Honors college, law, graduate school, and, as of Fall 2009, medicine. Each of these colleges has schools within that run specific academic programs. Both Army and US Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs are maintained at FIU.

Florida International University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. SACS provides accreditation to institutions within an eleven-state area, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
