Jacksonville University
Jacksonville University (JU) was founded in 1934 as a junior college that offered night classes. It was originally located in downtown Jackson and moved to its present location in the Arlington area during the early 1950s. This was the time when it became a four-year coeducational institution. At present, JU has successfully combined the strengths of a liberal arts college and an urban comprehensive community in bringing its academic programs to its students. JU is located at 2800 University Blvd. N. Jacksonville, Florida, having the advantage of a beautiful riverfront setting.
The academic offerings of JU consist of more than 60 majors and concentrations as well as programs leading to seven bachelor’s degrees and four master’s degrees. There are about 3,400 students presently enrolled in the campus coming from 45 states and at least 50 foreign countries. The average class size is 18 while the student/faculty ratio is 14:1.
The JU programs are offered through its College of Arts and Sciences, the Davis College of Business, College of Fine Arts, School of Education, School of Nursing, School of Orthodontics and the Marine Science Research Institute (MSRI). The MSRI was established by JU primarily to help preserve and protect the city’s most important natural asset in the water system.
