Saint Thomas University
Saint Thomas University is a private Christian institution located in Miami Gardens, Florida. It was first founded in 1961 by the Augustinian Friars under the name of Biscayne College. It is a Roman Catholic school that became a University in 1984 when it added master’s degrees programs, and one that was sponsored by the Archdiocese of Miami in 1988, a rare distinction for the institution. Its name is a reference to the school’s roots in Havana, Cuba. There are currently around 2,517 students enrolled at STU at a student to faculty ratio of 19:1.
Academic programs at Saint Thomas University are available as both bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees from six separate schools within the institution. Biscayne College provides bachelor’s degrees in areas like criminal justice, English and the political sciences, plus master’s degrees in guidance & counseling, marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling. The School of Business provides nine different bachelor’s degrees in business subjects as well as five master’s degrees, including one in business administration. The School of Law provides four Juris Doctorates with various majors and a separate degree in intercultural human rights. The School of Leadership Studies offers five bachelor’s degrees, seven master’s degrees and a single doctorate in educational leadership. The School of Science, Technology & Engineering Management makes four bachelor’s degrees available as well as pre-engineering and pre-nursing programs. Finally, the School of Theology & Ministry offers two bachelor’s degrees, one master’s degree, four certificates and a single Ph.D. In practical theology.
Saint Thomas University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. SACS provides accreditation to institutions within an eleven-state area, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
