University of Florida

The University of Florida (“UF”) is a public research university located in Gainesville, FL. It was founded in 1853 and is now one of the largest institutions of higher learning in the country. UF is well known for its research efforts. In fact, Gatorade was developed by researchers working at the University!

The student population at UF is a large one, and is made up of 51,400 undergraduate and 15,800 graduate students. They are taught by 4,500 faculty members. The student-to-teacher ratio at UF is 22:1.

Other than its impressive research facilities, UF is known for its Business Administration, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Pharmacy, Political Science, and Psychology programs. The 2,000-acre campus is home to 17 colleges and more than 150 research centers and institutes.

Admission Requirements

For prospective undergrads at UF, the entire application is done online. The University does not accept paper applications. To be considered, you must have obtained your high school diploma or a G.E.D. The minimum combined score on your SAT (reading, writing and math) is 1330. UF is looking for a minimum of 440 for each section.

You can submit your online application to UF from July 1-November 1. Decisions are available online starting February 13. Students planning to attend UF are required to pay a $200 tuition deposit by May 1. All offers of admission to current high school students are conditional on the University receiving final transcripts and the grades being acceptable.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Students at UF who are residents of the State get a break on the cost of their tuition. They are charged $2,670 per academic year. Out-of-state residents will need to pay $18,173 for tuition. Room and board is $7,150, with the cost of a room only coming in at $4,630.

University of Florida Sports

The UF athletic teams are called the Gators. They compete in the NCAA Division I, Southwestern Conference. Student athletes at UF have done well on the field and in their studies, having won 21 national championships and had a number of seasons where more than 100 members of varsity teams have made the University’s honor roll.

The men’s basketball team has performed well in recent years. The 2006-2007 playing season marked the third consecutive year that UF had won the SEC tournament title. Only two other schools (Kentucky and Alabama) have won the tournament three years running.

Online Programs

The University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business Administration offers an online Bachelor’s degree program. This program is only available to Florida residents. The program may be completed in as little as two years, but students may take three or more to finish the courses, if need be.
