American Intercontinental University
American Intercontinental University is a privately run, for-profit undergraduate and graduate institution located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded in 1970 in Europe as the American College of Applied Arts. The Atlanta campus, which was opened in 1976 (there are many other campuses nationwide), is three acres in size, with an enrollment of 4,791 and a student to faculty ratio of 15:1.
AIU at Atlanta offers academic programs centered on five different areas of study: business, criminal justice, design, healthcare management and information technology. In the area of business, four associate’s degrees are available, six bachelor’s degrees and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with twelve possible concentrations. An Associate of Science can be obtained in criminal justice, plus two bachelor’s degrees (including a major in forensic science). Seven bachelor’s in design are provided by AIU: interior design, media production, visual communication, game design and development, fashion design, fashion marketing and fashion marketing and design. Both bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees are available in healthcare management. Finally, a single Bachelor of Information Technology degree is available with concentrations in computer forensics, computer systems and computer security.
American Intercontinental University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The Higher Learning Commission is one of two separate commissions within the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), a regional accrediting agency that is recognized by the United States Department of Education as well as the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The association was originally founded in 1895, and the Higher Learning Commission is currently responsible for the accreditation of over one thousand schools within a nineteen state area.
