College of Coastal Georgia
The College of Coastal Georgia was first created in 1961 in Brunswick, Georgia, under the name of Brunswick College, the first two-year college in the state. It has since undergone two name changes and has grown to expand its four-year undergraduate academic programs, with its 193-acre campus currently home to around 3,000 students and a student to faculty ratio of 30:1.
CCGA provides students with associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees. Associate’s degrees make up the majority of the academic offerings at the institution. There are thirty-nine associate’s degrees in total, plus five separate career associate programs, with a sixth coming in the 2009-2010 academic year. Some examples of associate’s degrees at CCGA would be communication, philosophy, geology, physics, pre-pharmacy, recreation and sociology. Four bachelor’s degrees are provided by the college: business, early childhood/special education, middle grades education, and, come 2010, nursing. Finally, there are both bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees available to students of CCGA in conjunction with Georgia State University and Armstrong Atlantic State University. Bachelor’s degrees provided in this manner include criminal justice, early childhood education, history and liberal studies. Three master’s degrees are available: business administration, education and nursing. A single specialist program in education is also available.
The College of Coastal Georgia is accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. SACS provides accreditation to institutions within an eleven-state area, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
