Georgia Southwestern State University
Georgia Southwestern State University was originally named the Third Agricultural and Mechanical School. It was founded in 1906 in Americus, Georgia. It has since changed its name and become a member of the University System of Georgia (it is a public school). Its 250-acre campus is currently home to around 2,700 students, and the student to faculty ratio is 19:1.
Academic programs at GSW offer undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees and certifications. Undergraduate programs are available in the subjects of art, business, computers, dramatic arts, education, English, exercise science & wellness, history, mathematics, music, nursing, political science, psychology, recreation, science and sociology. Pre-professional programs are offered in the fields of engineering, dentistry, law, medicine, medical technology, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician’s assistant, veterinary professional, professional writing and teacher assistant. Six different certifications are available to students of GSW.
Georgia Southwestern State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. SACS provides accreditation to institutions within an eleven-state area, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
