It became an independently chartered institution and separated from Morehouse College in 1981. It is located at 720 Westview Drive, SW Atlanta, Georgia.

Aside from its Westview campus, MSM maintains the Morehouse Medical Associates for faculty practice as well as the Buggy Works Building Core and Clinical Facilities. It counts as its affiliates several medical centers including the Atlanta Medical Center, Atlanta Veterans Administration Medical Center, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding, DeKalb Medical Center, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Georgia Division of Public Health, Georgia Regional Hospital at Atlanta and South Fulton Medical Center. MSM is also a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium.

Accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, MSM awards degrees in Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences, Master of Science in Clinical Research, Master of Science in Biomedical Technology, as well as the Master of Public Health. Its seven accredited residency programs include Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Family Medicine. A first year student is expected to need a budget total of at least $ 60,000.00 to include tuition, fees, books and supplies, room, board, personal and transportation expense. The amount allotted for room inclusive of utilities is based on a one-bedroom apartment. Some students may be able to manage with a smaller budget depending on their ability to control personal expenses whenever possible. Need-based grants are provided to qualified students.
