Blackburn College
Blackburn College is quite distinct, being the only college campus in the United States to be built by its own students. Through its Work Program, all students who are on-campus residents agree to work 10 to 15 hours per week while engaged in a challenging academic environment. The college has also the distinction of having the only Work Program managed by students among seven existing work colleges in the country. Two student general managers take full responsibility for at least 500 student employees. It should be understood however, that academics remain the priority over anything else.
This Presbyterian Church-affiliated college was founded in 1837 and is located at 700 College Avenue, Carlinville, Illinois. Blackburn College offers the Bachelor of Arts Degree with majors in the field of Art, Biology, Business Administration and Economics, Chemistry and Physics, Communications, Computer Science and Mathematics, Criminal Justice, Education, English, History, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Political Science, Psychology and Spanish. Its current student/faculty ratio is 12:1. There are six dormitories on campus that serve as housing facilities for students.
An incoming freshman’s direct educational cost is about $ 18,867.00 inclusive of tuition, room and board. Work credit is deducted from the total. The Work Program is primarily for the purpose of cost reduction although it simultaneously seeks to provide learning opportunities for leadership and community development which may not be available in traditional classroom teaching. All work performed are done in partnership with faculty and staff. Some examples of those jobs are classroom aides at the local elementary and middle schools or assistants/aides at the Center for Developmentally Disabled, Public Heart Department and the Beaver Dam State Park, among others.
