Eastern Illinois University
Eastern Illinois University is one of seven residential public universities in the State of Illinois. It is located in Charlestown, in east-central Illinois, about 135 miles east of St. Louis. Its 320-acre campus houses 72 buildings including 17 apartment buildings and 12 residential halls. Although the area boasts of a low crime rate, the university offers additional security through the maintenance of its own police force of 20 officers.
More than 45 major courses of study leading to a bachelor’s or master’s degree are offered through the university’s College of Arts and Humanities, College of Business and Applied Sciences, College of Education and Professional Studies and the College of Sciences. About 90% of its 12,000 students attending per semester are full-time. Faculty members number more than 500. The average class size is 22 while the student/faculty ratio is 16:1. Small classes are deliberately maintained to facilitate better student learning and academic experience.
On-campus housing facilities are currently serving the residential needs of more than 4,000 students. A unique student-funded shuttle bus called the Panther Express performs the task of transporting students to and from classes as well as local businesses. Weekend bus service to and from the area of Chicago is also offered as additional service.
Annual cost of tuition for in-state students is $ 7,170.00 while the rate for out-of-state student is $ 21,510.00. Students can take advantage of textbook rental for a yearly cost of $ 298.00. Room and board cost about $ 7,768.00 while program/service fees total $ 1,961.00. The mentioned rates are based on 30-hour enrollment with the 12-plus meal option. The university’s Gateway Program provides access to underrepresented and disadvantaged students such as those coming from low income households.
The student body is composed mostly of individuals coming from Illinois and the Midwest. There are at least 38 other states and 40 foreign countries represented.
