Elmhurst College

When Carl Frederick Kranz arrived in Elmhurst, Illinois in 1871 from Germany with his 14 students, his mission was to establish a new institution that would be eventually developed into a college which would teach the liberal arts within the context of the Christian faith. The German Evangelical Proseminary was the product of his efforts. It not only attracted aspiring teachers and pastors but also young men intent on having careers in business or engineering or professions in fields such as law and medicine. The early curriculum was quite heavy in German fare.

It was sometime in 1994 when Elmhurst College started to make impressive progress in terms of facilities, programs and number of students. The enhanced student profile raised the expectations of faculty on students as well as students on one another. Three “centers of distinction” rose from the college’s efforts to develop an edge over similar institutions of learning. These are the Center of Professional Excellence, which was launched in 1997, the Niebuhr Center established in 2001 and the Center for the Health Professions which was established in 2003.
