To date, more than 1,400 individuals in the early childhood profession have earned their master’s degrees or certificates through Erikson. Yearly certificate and professional development programs are attended by at least 2,500 practitioners. Erikson has also offered its first off-site master’s program in DuPage County. There are about 230 students enrolled in the master’s programs, 15 in the doctoral program and 55 in the certificate programs.

A Vienna-trained psychologist specializing on the psychological development of children by the name of Maria Piers founded Erikson Institute. Together with social worker, Lorraine Wallach and educator, Barbara Taylor Bowman, she established an early childhood training institute in Chicago. Businessman Irving B. Harris provided the start-up funds. The school was named after Erik Erikson, a German-born psychoanalyst who first proposed the idea that children are products of the expectations, prejudices and prohibitions of society.

Tuition costs $ 770.00 per semester credit hour. Annual student fees amount to $ 400.00 covering library, technology and activity costs. Erikson Institute is a non-residential school thus housing options are usually provided by housing facilities found in the City of Chicago as well as nearby suburbs.
