Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary

Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary is the graduate school of theology of the United Methodist Church. Located in Evanston, Illinois, on the campus of Northwestern University, the seminary, which was founded in 1853, remains committed to its mission to “know God in Christ, and through preparing spiritual leaders, to help others know God in Christ.”

As a graduate school of theology, the seminary offers a number of programs leading to a Master of Arts or a Doctoral degree. The academic program is the means through which the seminary is able to fulfill its mission to develop students who will become leaders of their church, their community or the world. Its Master of Divinity program prepares students for ordination and ministry and allows them to choose a particular field of specialty. The Master of Arts degree provides basic theological education plus a chosen specialization. It also fulfills the degree requirement for the deacon track of the United Methodist Church. The Doctor of Philosophy degree prepares students for ministry and liberal arts teaching careers.

Estimated cost of attendance for academic year 2009-2010 is US$36,869 for the Master of Divinity program; US$36,329 for the Master of Arts, Master of Theological Studies Program; and US$42,209 for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programs. Financial Aid is provided by way of scholarships, grants, loans and student employment.

On-campus housing is encouraged to allow students to develop a sense of community with their fellow students as they live and study together. Those who apply early can choose from a variety of housing options.
