Illinois Institute of Technology
Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) was established as a technology-based learning institution that aims to provide exceptional preparation for professions requiring technological expertise. It is presently a PhD granting university with programs offered in engineering, science, psychology, business, architecture, design and law. The university has the IIT Research Institute as its contract research affiliate, having a combined annual research volume of $ 130 million.
IIT’s main campus is located near South Side of Chicago. It has four other campuses namely the Downtown Campus, the Institute of Design, the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Campus and the Moffett Campus. The present day IIT is largely influenced by educational programs created by Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy which is primarily used in the College of Architecture of IIT and the Institute of Design. IIT’s main campus is considered one of the masterworks of Mies, a German born architect and educator. Moholy-Nagy is credited for providing the vision and creativity for the Institute of Design.
IIT is a product of several predecessor institutions; the earliest established was the Armour Institute of Technology in 1890. The year 1940 saw the merger of Armour Institute with Lewis Institute. Together they formed what is to be known as the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mies developed the plans for the newly expanded campus consisting of 120 acres. The extensive influence of Mies and his protégées and students can be clearly seen in the Chicago skyline.
A typical undergraduate course taken at IIT costs $ 28,512,00 for tuition, $ 9,756 to $ 12,682.00 for room and board, $ 1,000.00 to $ 1,500.00 for books and $ 850.00 for fees. Other expenses that need to be considered are costs of health insurance, transportation and personal expenses. IIT offers its programs through its colleges, institutes and centers including the Armour College of Engineering, Center for Professional Development, Chicago-Kent College of Law, College of Architecture, College of Science and Letters, Institute of Design, Institute of Psychology and the Stuart School of Business.
