Northwestern University
Northwestern University is a private university with campuses in Evanston and Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1851, the school gets its name from the Northwest Territory that was created by Congress in 1787. Northwestern’s student body is made up of 8,262 undergraduates and 9,744 graduate students.
Northwestern is an interesting combination of a world-class research institution and a small-college feeling. The vast majority (over 97 percent) of the classes are taught by the University’s 1,047 faculty members, and undergrads have the opportunity to conduct research and participate in independent study programs. The student-to-faculty ratio at Northwestern is only 7:1, and most classes have less than 20 students.
