University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame is a private Roman Catholic institution that is located in Notre Dame, Indiana. It was established in 1842 as an institution that was open to male students only. The first female students were admitted to Notre Dame in 1972 and now women make up 47 percent of the student body.

Notre Dame’s 1250-acre campus is home to 8,300 undergraduate students and 3,200 graduate students. They are taught by 1,240 faculty members, and the student-to-teacher ratio is a very respectable 13:1.

The University is known for its Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Law, and Political Science programs. The U.S. News and World Report ranked Notre Dame at No. 18 on its 2008-2009 list. Most of Notre Dame’s students live on campus in one of the university’s single-sex residences.

First-year students at Notre Dame take courses in a number of subject areas without having to declare a major right away. The following Schools and Colleges offer courses for undergrads:

Admission Requirements

Prospective students can apply for Early Action by submitting their application, transcripts, teacher evaluations, and SAT scores by November 1. You will be notified of the decision by December 15. The deadline for Regular Action is December 31, and decision letters are mailed in early April.

There is no minimum GPA or SAT score that will get you in to Notre Dame. If you chose a very rigorous curriculum in high school and rank at or near the top of your class, the school will consider your application to be quite competitive when compared with other applicants. Only about 27 percent of those who apply to Notre Dame are accepted, and you will also need to impress the school through your extracurricular activities and community service if you want to be accepted.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Going to Notre Dame on a full-time basis is not cheap. Tuition alone costs $36,340 for full-time students. If you want to study at Notre Dame on a part-time basis, it will cost $1,514 per credit. The cost of room and board will add another $9,828 to your bill, and you will also need to include $507 for mandatory student fees in your education budget.

Sports at Notre Dame

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish compete in the NCAA Division I. A total of 26 varsity sports are offered at the university. The school is well known for its football and basketball teams. The Notre Dame men’s basketball team has racked up over 1,600 wins and has played in 28 NCAA tournaments.

The ice hockey team has also distinguished itself over the years. It ended the 2006-2007 season with a first-place ranking and played in the national finals a year later. The team lost to Boston College by a score of 4-1.
