Central College
Central College, founded in 1853 by Dutch immigrants in Pella, southeast of Des Moines in the state of Iowa, is a four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the Reformed Church in America.
Its academic programs spans nearly 40 majors with pre-professional mentoring available in several disciplines. It operates a study-abroad program through its nine study centers: Paris, France; Vienna, Austria; Granada, Spain; Bangor, Wales; London, England; Merida, Yucatan, Mexico; Leiden, the Netherlands; Colchester, England; and China. Due to the popularity of this program, more than 50 percent of Central College students study overseas.
With an enrollment of 1,700 and a faculty membership of 89 full-time faculty members most of whom hold a Ph.D. or a terminal degree, it has an average class size of 20 students for a student to faculty ratio of only 14-to-1.
Breakdown of costs to attend Central for the academic year 2009-2010 totals to $33,378: Tuition – $24,630; Room – $4,104; Board – $4,264; Activity Fee – $180; Technology Fee – $200. Books costs an average of $800 per year. Nearly 100% percent of students receive financial aid in the form of federal student loans, grants and scholarships.
Central College is listed in Barron’s Best Buys in College Education. The Center for College Affordability and Productivity and Forbes magazine rate Central College as among the Best Value Midwestern Colleges in 2009.
