Grinnell College

In its mission statement, Grinnell College affirms its commitment to produce graduates “who can think clearly, who can speak and write persuasively and even eloquently, who can evaluate critically both their own and others’ ideas, who can acquire new knowledge, and who are prepared in life and work to use their knowledge and their abilities to serve the common good.”

Founded in 1846 by a group of New England Congregationalists, Grinnell College, located in Grinnell, Iowa, is a private liberal arts college offering Bachelor of Arts degrees in a variety of majors to students who must first complete a basic liberal arts and sciences course. With a current student population of 1,500, Grinnell nonetheless has a student to faculty ratio of 8 to 1. This guarantees students an individualized type of interaction with their teachers.

As a residential college, Grinnel values the importance of having students live together as one community where they can interact and learn from one another. This being the case, the college has adopted a policy requiring students to live on campus all the four years of their college stay. Exemptions are only possible in their junior and senior years and for valid reasons.

Cost of tuition for academic year 2009-2010 at Grinnell College is US$45,012 for undergraduate students at the freshman and junior levels. This includes tuition, room and board, student activity fee and health fee. For graduating seniors, cost of tuition is US$40,552. To help defray costs for students who may find it difficult to settle their tuition bills, financial aid is extended by the college in the form of loans, scholarships and grants.
