Iowa State University
Iowa State University was established in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm. Being a land grant institution, it sought to make higher education accessible to all while offering liberal and practical subjects. Its research programs are internationally recognized and have provided breakthroughs in areas such as renewable energies, sustainability, materials and processes for biomedical and industrial applications and many others. Located in Ames, Iowa, the university’s campus is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the country. It features 490 acres of trees, plants, buildings of classical design and a 20-acre central lawn. The central lawn has been further enhanced through time by the addition of buildings around it.
There are more than 100 majors to choose from in the offered undergraduate degree programs of the university’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Business, College of Design, College of Engineering, College of Human Science and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Undecided students are assigned to special academic advisers to help them explore their interests while completing general education requirements. Most of the university’s top programs are in the field of architecture, interior design and landscape architecture.

It has over 100 buildings, a far cry from the original campus which consisted of 14 buildings including some barns. The Farm House built in 1860 is the oldest building on campus.
